The club

Founded on 24 October 1920 in Pamplona. Osasuna is Basque for health, in the sense of strength. It is one of only three member-owned clubs in Spanish professional football, alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic, and by far the smallest. The president is elected by members and is barred from investing his own money in the club. El Sadar's 2019 redesign turned an already hostile ground into a measurable home advantage.

Things worth knowing

  • Member-owned, and the club's rules prevent the president from putting his own money in, which caps both the risk and the ambition.
  • At least ten players and staff were killed, imprisoned or persecuted after the 1936 coup.
  • Reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2006–07, knocking out Bayer Leverkusen 4–1 on aggregate.
  • Beat Real Madrid 4–0 at the Bernabéu in December 1990.
