The club
Formed on 23 August 1923 by the merger of Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna, giving the city a single club strong enough to compete nationally. Celta have never won a major domestic trophy, three Copa del Rey finals, no wins, but finished fourth in 1948 and 2003 and reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2017. The Vigo academy has become a genuine national supplier in the years since.
Things worth knowing
- Beat Liverpool 4–1 on aggregate in the 1998–99 UEFA Cup during the “EuroCelta” years.
- Citroën sponsored the shirt from 1985 to 2016, one of the longest such deals in world football, the factory is a short walk from the ground.
- Marián Mouriño became the club's first woman president in late 2023.
- Lost 0–10 to Athletic Club in 1942 and 1–10 to Gimnàstic in 1949.
