Sevilla FC
Seven Europa Leagues, one broken recruitment model, and an instructive rebuild.
The club
Sevilla date themselves to 25 January 1890, which would make them Spain's oldest club devoted solely to football; the articles of association were not registered until October 1905, and some records use that date. They have won LaLiga once, in 1946, and the UEFA Cup or Europa League seven times, more than any other club. The Sánchez-Pizjuán, opened in 1958, holds 42,714 and is among the loudest grounds in Spain.
Things worth knowing
- Seven Europa League titles is a competition record, and more than double the next-best Spanish club.
- Beat Recreativo de Huelva 2–0 on 8 March 1890 in what is generally counted as the first official match played in Spain.
- Diego Maradona spent the 1992–93 season here, signed for around $7.5m and released after clashes with Bilardo.
- The Sánchez-Pizjuán hosted a 1982 World Cup semi-final, West Germany against France.
