Real Betis Balompié
The best-supported club in Spain relative to city size, and a genuine tactical laboratory.
The club
Founded on 12 September 1907 as Sevilla Balompié, merging in 1914 with Betis FC, a club formed by men who had split from Sevilla FC, and taking the Real title from Alfonso XIII. Betis won LaLiga in 1935 and have three Copa del Rey wins. They are playing at La Cartuja while the Benito Villamarín undergoes a €262m rebuild.
Things worth knowing
- The motto *¡Viva el Betis manque pierda!*, long live Betis even when they lose, is the most quoted line in Spanish fan culture.
- Founder Manuel Ramos Asensio got the green and white fabric from Celtic, then turned the hoops on their side to make stripes.
- Won the league in 1935 and were in the third tier by 1947, where they stayed a decade.
- Reached their first European final in 2024–25, losing the Conference League final to Chelsea.
