The most stylistically stubborn club in LaLiga, and a reliable disruptor of title races.
The club
The current club was founded on 8 July 1983, after the earlier Getafe Deportivo, formed in 1946, folded. It climbed from regional football to LaLiga in twenty years, arriving in 2004. Getafe reached consecutive Copa del Rey finals in 2007 and 2008, losing both, and finished fifth in 2018–19, their highest placing. The Coliseum holds 16,500, among the smallest in the division, and the club has built an identity out of making technical superiority stop mattering there.
Things worth knowing
- Went from regional leagues to LaLiga in twenty years, reaching the top flight in 2004.
- Beat Barcelona 4–0 in the second leg of the 2007 Copa del Rey semi-final, then lost the final to Sevilla.
- Reached the 2008 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, going out to Bayern Munich.
- In 2011 the club made a spoof adult film and sent it to sperm banks, on the theory that it might eventually produce more Getafe supporters.
