The club

Founded on 25 May 1948 as Club Atlético Malagueño and taking on the city's senior role after CD Málaga, founded 1933, was wound up. Málaga reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2012–13, then fell through three divisions in a decade. They returned to LaLiga through the play-offs in 2026. La Rosaleda holds 30,044, and the fanbase filled it through all three divisions on the way down and back up.

Things worth knowing

  • Led Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League quarter-final until two goals in stoppage time, both from contested offside positions, ended the run.
  • Dropped to the third tier in May 2023, their first time there since 1998, then climbed back to LaLiga in three seasons.
  • The only major trophy is the 2002 Intertoto Cup, won by beating Villarreal in the final.
  • Beat Barcelona 5–1 at La Rosaleda under Juande Ramos, with a hat-trick from substitute Salva Ballesta.
