The ground

Opened in 1923 and rebuilt repeatedly since, Mestalla's near-vertical upper tiers make it one of the most intimidating grounds in Europe. It was destroyed by the Turia flood in October 1957 and rebuilt with floodlights two years later. Work on the replacement Nou Mestalla began in 2007, stalled in 2009, and has only recently restarted.

Things worth knowing

  • The upper tier is so steep that looking down from the back rows induces vertigo in some spectators.
  • Wrecked by the Turia river flood of October 1957 and rebuilt within two years.
  • The unfinished Nou Mestalla stood as a concrete skeleton for well over a decade, the longest-running stadium saga in Europe.
  • Used as a concentration camp and a rubbish dump during and after the Civil War before being restored.
