Estadio de La Romareda
Zaragoza, Aragon · Real Zaragoza
Being rebuilt for a World Cup by a club that just dropped to the third tier.
The ground
Opened in 1957 and hosting three matches at the 1982 World Cup, La Romareda is being rebuilt with 2030 in mind. The timing is awkward: Real Zaragoza were relegated to Primera Federación in 2025–26, their first spell in the third tier since 1949. The city is betting a stadium on a tournament its club may not be near.
Things worth knowing
- Hosted three matches at the 1982 World Cup, including a Belgium win over El Salvador.
- The rebuild proceeds while the club plays in the third tier for the first time since 1949.
- Owned by Zaragoza city council, which is why the rebuild is a municipal decision as much as a sporting one.
- A provisional 2030 World Cup venue.
