Estadio Benito Villamarín
Seville, Andalusia
Betis's home since 1929, closed for a €262m rebuild that will push it past 70,000.
The ground
Opened in 1929 in the Heliópolis district and named after the president who bought the land for the club. It has carried three names, Estadio de la Exposición, Benito Villamarín, and briefly Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, and is being rebuilt to more than 70,000 seats. Betis are playing at La Cartuja until the work finishes.
Things worth knowing
- Named after Benito Villamarín, the president who bought the ground outright for the club in 1961.
- Briefly renamed after Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, the president who put his own name on it, the source of the 2007 bust incident.
- The €262m rebuild takes capacity past 70,000, which would make it the third-largest club ground in Spain.
- A provisional 2030 World Cup venue, which is part of why the rebuild is happening now.
