The club

Founded on 5 March 1916 in Palma. Mallorca finished third in LaLiga in 1999 and 2001, lost the 1999 Cup Winners' Cup final to Lazio, and won the Copa del Rey in 2003. The club fell to the third tier by 2017 before American investment returned it to the top flight. Son Moix holds 25,736, and Mallorca remain the only club from the Balearics to have won a major Spanish trophy.

Things worth knowing

  • Lost the last-ever Cup Winners' Cup final but one, 2–1 to Lazio at Villa Park in 1999.
  • Robert Sarver and Steve Nash bought the club for €20m in January 2016, with relegation to the third tier looming.
  • Hosted Ajax in 1923, Uruguay's national team in 1925 and Colo-Colo in 1927, unusual company for a provincial Spanish club.
