Reale Arena
San Sebastián, Basque Country · Real Sociedad
The running track is gone, and Anoeta finally feels like a football ground.
The ground
Opened in 1993 with an athletics track that kept supporters far from the pitch and made it one of the quieter big grounds in Spain. A 2017–19 rebuild removed the track, dropped the pitch and brought the stands forward, adding capacity and transforming the atmosphere. It is a provisional 2030 World Cup venue.
Things worth knowing
- For 25 years an athletics track separated the crowd from the pitch; removing it was the single biggest improvement any Spanish ground has made this century.
- The rebuild lowered the playing surface rather than raising the stands, which kept the roofline unchanged.
- Real Sociedad's women's team and the reserve side also play here.
- A provisional 2030 World Cup venue.
