The ground

Opened on 2 August 2009 in Cornellà-El Prat, ending decades of Espanyol playing in grounds they did not own, Sarrià until 1997, then the Olympic stadium on Montjuïc. It holds 40,000 and was built with no running track and a tight bowl. The first match after it opened was overshadowed by the death of captain Dani Jarque days earlier.

Things worth knowing

  • Espanyol sold Sarrià in 1997 to clear debts and spent twelve years as tenants before this opened.
  • Captain Dani Jarque died six days after the ground was inaugurated; the crowd applauds in the 21st minute of every match.
  • Built without an athletics track at a time when several Spanish clubs still had one.
  • Sits in Cornellà, outside Barcelona's city limits, which the club's rivals never tire of mentioning.
