Riyadh Air Metropolitano
Madrid, Community of Madrid · Club Atlético de Madrid
Atlético's move east, and the cleanest modern bowl in Spain.
The ground
Built in 1994 as the Estadio de la Comunidad de Madrid for an Olympic bid that failed, left largely unused, then rebuilt and opened as Atlético's home in September 2017. The move ended fifty years at the Vicente Calderón on the banks of the Manzanares. It hosted the 2019 Champions League final two years after opening.
Things worth knowing
- Sat almost unused for two decades between its 1994 opening and Atlético's arrival in 2017.
- Hosted the 2019 Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham.
- The name has changed with the sponsor three times since opening; locals mostly just say Metropolitano.
- The Vicente Calderón, its predecessor, had a motorway running underneath one stand.
