Estadio de Mendizorrotza
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country · Deportivo Alavés
One of the last genuinely old-fashioned grounds in the top flight.
The ground
Opened in 1924 and still recognisably a pre-war ground, Mendizorrotza holds 19,840 in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It has been expanded rather than replaced, which is why the stands do not match each other. Alavés have played here for a century, through four divisions and a UEFA Cup final run.
Things worth knowing
- Alavés have played here continuously since 1924, through spells in all four divisions.
- The stands were added piecemeal over decades and visibly do not match.
- Hosted Alavés's home leg on the way to the 2001 UEFA Cup final.
- Sits at 525 metres above sea level, among the highest grounds in Spanish football.
