Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero
Elche, Valencian Community · Elche CF
A 1982 World Cup ground that is larger than its club's league position usually justifies.
The ground
Opened in 1976 and named after the president who built it, Martínez Valero holds 33,732, considerably more than Elche's usual crowds. It hosted three matches at the 1982 World Cup, including Hungary's 10–1 win over El Salvador, still the highest-scoring match in World Cup history.
Things worth knowing
- Hungary beat El Salvador 10–1 here in 1982, still the biggest win and highest score in World Cup history.
- Capacity comfortably exceeds Elche's average attendance, a legacy of building for the World Cup.
- Named after Manuel Martínez Valero, the club president who died in 1976, the year it opened.
- The pitch is among the widest in Spanish professional football.
