Estadio de la Cerámica
Villarreal, Valencian Community · Villarreal CF
A 23,000-seat ground in a town of 50,000 that has hosted two Champions League semi-finals.
The ground
Opened in 1923 as El Madrigal and renamed Estadio de la Cerámica in 2017 for the tile industry that built the town. It holds 23,008, close to half the population of Villarreal itself. Despite the size it has hosted Champions League semi-final football and a Europa League campaign that ended in the 2021 title.
Things worth knowing
- Capacity is roughly half the population of the town the club plays for.
- Renamed in 2017 after the ceramics industry that underwrites much of the local economy and the club.
- Has hosted Champions League semi-final legs against Arsenal and Liverpool.
- Known as El Madrigal for its first 94 years, and plenty of locals still call it that.
