The ground

Opened in 2000, replacing the old Carlos Tartiere, and holding 30,500. Within three years Real Oviedo had fallen to the fourth tier and come close to folding altogether. The ground stayed, and the crowds largely stayed with it, the 2012 global share issue that saved the club was underwritten by exactly those supporters.

Things worth knowing

  • Opened in 2000; by 2003 the club playing in it was in the fourth division and nearly bankrupt.
  • Franco's troops used the previous ground on this site as an ammunition dump during the Civil War.
  • Carlos Slim's 2012 investment and a worldwide small-shareholder campaign kept the club alive.
  • Attendances in the third tier regularly beat those of second-division clubs.
