The ground

Opened on 24 September 1957 as Estadi del FC Barcelona and known almost immediately as Camp Nou, the new ground. It has been the largest stadium in Europe for most of its life, peaking around 120,000 before all-seater rules. The current Espai Barça rebuild is the biggest construction project in European club football, and the club's medium-term plan assumes matchday revenue returns at full scale.

Things worth knowing

  • Members voted on the name in 2000 and chose to keep the informal Camp Nou over the official Estadi del FC Barcelona.
  • Held a European record crowd of around 120,000 before conversion to all-seater.
  • Barcelona played at Montjuïc during the rebuild, the same hill where Levante won the 1937 Copa de la España Libre.
  • A provisional 2030 World Cup venue, which puts a hard external deadline on the construction schedule.
